Power Pack you morning with this juice!

Good Morning to Everyone!

A Gal-friend of mine just asked for my juice recipe, and I realized that i kinda "wing it" depending on what I have purchased at the local farmer's market.

Well, this weekend I took the time to drive out to Ojai for their Sunday farmer's market!

Talk about some beautiful veggies, most locally grown and organic!

I took home a haul of beautiful varieties, and make an absolutely power-packed juice!

Even my mom licked her lips with delight after our morning chug of juice.

For those of you who don't know, my mom had a severe reaction to an antibiotic, Levaquin, which changed her life drastically!  She had a severe reaction that almost killed her, and unfortunately landed her in a convalescent home.

Back in August of 2013, mom could barely transfer from a bed, to a wheelchair without two people assisting her; now, after lots of green juice, and fulvic/humic minerals, she is using an upright walker with the help of one person!  The smile on her face was awesome; just seeing her proud of her accomplishment at 89 years old was a delight to my heart!

I owe a lot of her recovery to green juice.  I don't remember exactly when I started taking her the beautiful green beverages, but her response was not always a pleasant one!  But over time, she has grown to love the juice as much as I do!

I am going to give you the base, then realize that the other veggies can be added according to taste, and availability!  I try to buy organic, and definitely hit the local farmer's markets.  Get to know your growers, and where your food is coming from!  Here you go!

  • 1 green apple including seeds!
  • 1 cucumber, or a couple of the small English cucumbers (hydrating)
  • 1 whole bunch of celery…some people do a few stalks, but I like the celery because of the natural sodium…I don’t salt anything!
  • 1 whole lemon (I use Meyer lemons that are organic so I juice the skin)…but if I don’t have a Meyer, any lemon will do…
  • 1 thumb sized piece of ginger root…I have grown to add more ginger, but had to get used to it.

You can put some turmeric root in there if able to be found (anti-carcinogenic) or a splash of cayenne if you like a little more heat( great for cardiovascular)

The above is the base:

Then, like yesterday, I added the following, it was LOADED… but you can pick and choose what you have, or like.
I don’t add fruit unless it is apple, grape (with seeds), pear, lemon, sometimes lime or orange peeled if I don’t have lemon, which acts as a preservative)

  • Large bunch of black Kale
  • Red leaf lettuce
  • Large bunch of Red Kale
  • Bunch of cilantro
  • Bunch of parsley
  • Mint from my garden, two varieties
  • Basil
  • Dill
  • Mustard (the plant)
  • Collard green (one or two large leaves)
  • Tomato
  • Carrot
  • Dandelion (large bunch, great for liver)
  • Beet tops (I sometime do not use the root because it can turn your urine blood red, and I don’t want the convalescent hospital thinking my mom is bleeding)
  • Broccoli (large or baby)
  • Red Pepper
  • I added a bunch of sprouted garbanzos, peas, alfalfa, radish and sunflower
  • Fennel

And quite frankly, adjust to taste…some of the more bitter veggies you have to get used to but they are great for liver detox!

Have fun with it and enjoy!

Love you all!

Kathy

Hop to it "GO JUICE" for the morning!

Gotta new yummy juice for you "juicers" out there

November, 2013

Happy November Everyone!

It has been a long time since I have blogged on juicing, but I'm back!

I have to say that my juice for the morning made me smile!

As you know, I choose organic veggies and fruits for all juices...

I know, you think it might cost a bit more, but aren't you worth it?

We so need to get away from pesticides, and one place to start is with out food!

After all, we are what we eat...so it has been said...and I believe proved!

Carrots, apples, a juicer, a strainer and glass jar are all you need for the making of this delightful beverage!

Apples have pectin, and minerals, and come in a wide range of varieties.  This morning, I used both green and red apples, and frankly, I am not going to dictate which apples you use.

Just know that apples contain many vitamins and nutrients which  help detox the body of harmful substance, and are good for the heart, and help maintain liver health.

So what about carrots?  I grew up on carrot juice, and to be honest, I find carrot juice hard to swallow.  I think I just had too many glasses of carrot juice when I was a kid, but you know, I was not sick very often, and I definitely had strong bones and tissue from the Vitamin A.

Apples help to sweeten the carrot juice, hence the blend of the two make it much easier on my taste buds, and actually enjoyable!

Carrots are one of the healthiest veggies around, and have been know to help eye problems, especially night vision.

They are packed with Vitamin C and Vitamin A which also aids in fighting colds, so as we move towards winter, timing is perfect for this blog!

Go to the Health Guidance website for more information on the benefits of apples and carrots. http://www.healthguidance.org/

Ok... the recipe:

Get yourself 4-5 medium sized organic apples, depending on how sweet you want your juice.  Make sure they are ripe, and mix red with green...whatever your taste preference might be.

Mirror that with 4-5 organic carrots...cleaned and with peels on!

I used my Omega juicer which chews up the food to produce the juice, but any juicer will do.

Blend the two together and enjoy!  Always bless your juice and be thankful for such pleasures!

Remember to always consult your Physician before drinking any raw, organic fruit juices, since they know your health circumstance and I don't.

Be Healthy, Happy and Thankful Daily!

Let the numbers speak! Juice for Health I say!

Happy New Year!
For many, this year's "resolution"  is not just another  fad diet, but a lifestyle change!  How about you?
Let's face it, we live in a very unhealthy society, and we need to change our own behaviors, and spark a movement of health across our "contact lists" of  family and friends!

I am guilty of loving dairy, meat, and sweets just as much as the next person, but frankly, I'm tired of being "fluffy", tired, and not feeling up to par!
So, I am working on a lifestyle change which includes increased consumption of fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, and decreased consumption of dairy, meat and sugary/carby stuff!

Juicing is my attack plan for daytime eating, followed by a sensible evening meal consisting of mostly veggies!

Did you know that citrus acts like a natural preservative for those of us who would like to carry a jar of juice to work!

Recently, when back East at a corporate function, a friend of mine shocked me with a 37 pound weight reduction and a total change of his lifestyle..Here is his story!  My friend Vince is a year shy of 50; he looks great, and as you can see by his testimony, he feels great!  The proof is in the pudding they say...

Vince's story:

I have always had high cholesterol and borderline hypertensive.  After seeing the documentary "Forks over Knives" and “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead” I decided to take what I put into my body more seriously and began juicing high nutrient fruits and veggies 2 – 3 times daily.  I’m 49 years old and have been on Lipitor for many years for which I have blood work done every 6 months to see where I’m at.  I was very interested to see where my results fell after juicing for 2 months as well as eliminating meat and dairy from my diet.

Prior 6 month results:                                                    Latest Results (after only 2 months of juicing)

Weight:  220 LBS                                                             183 LBS

Cholesterol:  240                                                              142

BP:  135/90                                                                     110/80

Triglycerides:  275                                                            56

The juicing made me feel terrific with much greater clarity of thought as well as increased energy levels but these results blew me (and especially my doctor) away.  With results like these I will be living this lifestyle for the remainder of my life.

Everyone...Kathy speaking again...I hope you take Vince's story as inspirational, I sure did!  Here's to good health in 2013!

Yummy morning pick-me-up Juice!

For all of you early risers who like a little "kick" in the morning, here's a juice I absolutely love!

I call it the Pommy surprise!

Needed:

Citrus Juicer
Regular Juicer (I use the Omega)

 5 oranges
1 big pomegranate
2-4 carrots
a little ginger (about an inch or less, around the size of your thumb...depending on taste)

Makes about 2 big huge glasses...depending on your juicers!

I use a citrus juicer for both the pomegranate and oranges...
I use the Omega juicer for both the carrots and ginger

First...wash your oranges and pomegranate
Then peel your carrots...makes for smoother carrot juice

Oh...I use organic fruits and veggies when possible, but not a deal-breaker!

split the oranges and pommy in 1/2 with a sharp knife  and juice...watch for pommy spray with the juicer cuz it can be a little messy....

I then run the pulp from the pommy through the Omega when I juice the carrots and ginger...just to get those pesky little seeds that don't munch up well...I don't want to leave any pommy juice behind!

I juice the carrots with the Omega; adjust the number of carrots ( 2-4 carrots ), depending on  how much you like carrot juice.

I add a little ginger, juiced as well, since it is good for digestion, but not necessary.  Maybe about  1/2 " is good for me.

If you have a moment to chill the beverage...even better, but right out of the shoot it is yummy!

Seriously now...let's talk juice!

The Truth about Juicing and Salads!

Many of you are asking me about juicing, and whether I "REALLY" enjoy drinking juice and eating salads!

Are you serious...I guess I have to think about this one!

If you would've asked me this question a year ago, I'd have to honestly say that juicing was more of a pain in the "booty" than it was worth...however...now, it has become a pleasure, and new lifestyle, that I thoroughly enjoy!

You might wonder...how did you get into juicing?

Great question...I guess you can say out of desperation...

I was not feeling well, looked bloated, and had lost so much of my energy, not to mention my stomach was hurting almost every night after dinner...

Some would say...take an antacid, but I know more than to stumble down that path...not good!

Now my boyfriend just blamed my stomach pain  on my "speed eating"...which, I must confess, has been an issue all of my life.  I ran from one sport to another as a kid, changing clothes and eating in the car, and as an adult, I went  from one patient to another as a nurse. Now, I run from one terminal to another traveling across the nation as a Clinical Specialist for a medical device company, so obviously, I have not slowed down very much.  Eating was always something I "did", but did not really enjoy.

I probably did not chew the food...the suggested 25 - 50 times per bite; heck, I was not allowing enough time for the digestive enzymes to enter into my mouth, much less start breaking down the food   before moving it on along its journey!  And stress...you betchya!  Running around like a mad-lady was not exactly eating in a "relaxed atmosphere" like the books suggest.  Oh no...shove and run was my motto!

I also consumed a lot of dairy; I love milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese...you name it, as well as a lot of meat and potatoes...Midwest staples I might add!

Then there's the airport munchies, like candy bars and snacks, that keep you going when your flight gets delayed, or you have to run to catch your next leg...remember, they really don't feed you on flights anymore.  And do you really want to eat their so-called food anyways?  Just saying!

So what is wrong with the above diet?  I found myself feeling sluggish, foggy, and not very motivated to move.  That bewitching 50 was just around the corner, and my middle was not shrinking!

Friends have been getting sick, seriously sick, and family members are riddled with arthritis and heart disease.  Not for me...No Way!

YouTube became my lifeline...I saw people starting to juice their way to health and happiness...their skin tones changed, they shrunk in limited time- frames, and appeared to feel like I used to feel as a kid...energetic, alive, and healthy!

After all, my parents, really my dad,  raised me on juicing, vitamins, and health food, so where did I go wrong, and what was going to kick me back onto the path of health?

One day, I visited YouTube...and researched juicers.  I had tried juice in the past, but burned out every juicer I had ever bought...only to give up on juicing.  I ended up with the Omega 8004, since it masticates (chews) the food just like you would, without leaving all of the residual pulp.  You get more yield out of your veggie and fruits, and clean-up is simple...

Pulp can make a juice a little hard to digest, but when you take it away, the juice flows into your system, and immediately starts to feed your cells!  Instant gratification if you ask me!  I could feel the difference; my sleep improved, my skin started to smooth out, and my eyes got brighter.  I started losing the belly fat, that had found my midriff...yuck!  Now, I am nowhere near where I want to end up, but well on my path to healing...

I juice almost daily, and have a reasonable meal in the evenings...mostly salads.  No more stomach aches, since the dairy is almost gone, and I feel like a new person!

Oh, the juice "veggie-tailings", I call them, go to my friend, and neighbor, who raises chickens...great for their eggs and saves him money to boot!

When I travel, I stick to salads, nuts, seeds, and stay away from the alcohol.  I try to get veggie snacks, if I know I'll be on a long drive across a hot desert, or hold-up in a hotel for extended periods of time.  It works if you put your mind to it.

Now, I am sharing the news!  Juicing, salads, nuts, seeds, fruits ...all to be cherished, and consumed.  If you hit-up your local farmer's market, you can even find reasonably priced organic food, which further nourishes your body, and soul!  Buon appetito!
